A good exhibition
starts with a question.

Curation shapes how artworks are encountered. Begin with these ideas from Gallery Curator Trainer, then try a small exercise of your own.

01 / FIND YOUR IDEA

A theme is more
than a category.

“Blue paintings” groups works by appearance. “Urban solitude” asks a question that very different artworks can explore.

Put it into practice
Think of three works that look different. What feeling, question or experience could connect them? Use that idea as a starting point for an exhibition.
02 / MAKE A SELECTION

Every work
earns its place.

A strong selection gives each artwork something to contribute: another voice, a new angle or a meaningful contrast.

Put it into practice
Imagine removing one work from a group. What would be lost? If the answer is “very little”, reconsider that work’s role in the exhibition.
03 / SHAPE THE EXPERIENCE

Order changes
the conversation.

The first work sets an expectation. The next can continue it or challenge it. The final work leaves an impression.

Put it into practice
Take the same three works and imagine two different sequences. What changes in the story or mood? Notice where a pause might help.
A minute of practice

Find a thread.
Build a theme.

A theme gives artworks a question to answer together. Try choosing a starting point and exploring the reasoning behind it.
